For truly high-security perimeters — prisons, military sites, power substations, border crossings — razor wire (concertina wire) is the right choice. For farms, rural boundaries, and low-risk industrial sites, barbed wire is sufficient and cheaper. Many projects use both: a 358 or chain-link fence body topped with razor wire coils.
Razor wire is made from a central high-tensile steel core wire with sharp steel blades crimped along its length, typically supplied as concertina coils (e.g., 450 mm, 600 mm, or 980 mm diameter).
Advantages:
Common uses: prisons, airports, substations, oil & gas plants, embassies, border fences.
Barbed wire uses two twisted steel wires with sharp barbs spaced at intervals. Lighter, cheaper, easier to handle.
Advantages:
Common uses: farms, ranches, rural land boundaries, low-security industrial yards.
For razor wire mounted on cranked fence arms, professional installers run a tension wire through the concertina coils and fix it to each arm — not loose binding wire wrapped around the brackets. A tensioned wire keeps the coils evenly spaced, prevents sagging in wind, and gives the installation a clean, professional finish that clients notice.
